Everyone knows marijuana turns people into raving lunatics who’d trade in their own moms for a cheeseburger meal with extra fries. Right? Yet in society’s eyes some folks are permitted to get high on the stuff while a dimmer view is taken of others. Male musicians, for example, get to smoke it without anyone batting an eyelid (“Real f****** high on drugs!”) so why not actresses? We couldn’t tell you, but judging from the reactions to these starlets being snapped in the act, the message seems to be: don’t get caught. These leading ladies did, and notwithstanding their varying fortunes, they’ll forever be tarred with the pernicious pothead brush. For shame. It’s a good thing they’re all so sexy, or we’d never have forgiven them. Without further ado, then, here are 10 smoking hot actresses caught blazing on bud. Or hash. We wouldn’t possibly know the difference.

10. Paris Hilton

What do you do if you get caught smoking pot? Blame it on someone you’re with – one of your entourage in this case. That’s what Paris Hilton did via her rep after she was allegedly arrested, then released, for possession of a bit of bush (no, the other bush!) while in South Africa for the World Cup. The incident occurred after the quarter final match between the Brazilians and the Dutch, so perhaps the men in orange reminded her of Amsterdam…

The sexy socialite everyone loves to hate (we’ll admit it’s a bit of a stretch to call her an actress) has repeatedly denied taking drugs, despite the apparent weight of evidence against her. See, the heiress’s acquaintance with all manner of illicit substances, marijuana among them, has been documented in video- and photo-graphic form. Don’t try and tell us that’s tobacco, Paris. We might suspect it’s crack.

9. Kristen Stewart

Here’s Kristen Stewart busted blazing up whilst sitting on the steps to her house with a friend back in 2008. For some strange and bewildering reason, commentators assumed the pipe in her hand contained a bit of the old whackytabacky. “After all, that’s the most common use for it,” observed one shrewd writer. Has the incident, as was suspected at the time, harmed her chances of success in Hollywood? Well, after her starring roles in the second and third Twilight movies – which smashed biggest midnight opening box office records – we’d have to say the answer is a resounding ‘No’. Indeed, the whitey she seems to be suffering from in this photo probably acquitted the gorgeous actress well for her roles in the vampiric saga.

8. Mischa Barton

There’s no denying Mischa Barton is smoking hot, but who would have thought we’d be saying Mischa Barton is smoking pot? Well, a lot of people actually. Here the O.C. star has been snapped by preying paparazzi with a suspiciously spliff-like rolled cigarette in her kisser. Was it jazzy? Er, we suspect so. It isn’t the first time Mischa’s been photographed in this light. And everyone remembers how she was arrested in 2007 on suspicion of driving under the influence and for possession of a little stash, after she was stopped during the early hours when cops saw her straddling two lanes in West Hollywood. Not literally, obviously. She was still in the car, not sprawled out on the road. That would’ve been some seriously strong stuff.

7. Lily Allen and Kate Moss

Is that Kate Moss sunbathing with a doobie between her fingers? We’re no experts, but that carrot shape looks like a dead giveaway to us. Straight out of Camberwell. The saucy tearaway supermodel was spotted smoking said reefer on a yacht while vacationing in the south of France last summer. And Kate wasn’t the only celeb involved…

Also on board was wild child Lily Allen. Yep, she’s the one passing the joint to her giggling chum. It must be good. In our green-lightened age, we wouldn’t usually be too quick to condemn those celebs who like a little toke on da ganja, but Kate’s daughter was right next to her when this shot was taken, which to some might suggest a lack of parental discretion. We’ll let you decide. And while you mull it over, here’s another shot of Lily chugging away at Glastonbury festival, just for the record.

Now, before you say anything, we know Kate Moss isn’t an actress, and that Lily Allen isn’t strictly speaking hot (in fact she only just qualifies as an actress, having only enjoyed bit parts here and there). But, we figured we could we could skirt the issue by including them as a joint entry – no pun intended, obviously. Are we forgiven?

6. and 5. Cameron Diaz and Drew Barrymore

By the grace of green-bud, does Cameron Diaz look baked in this picture? And we’re not just talking about the effects of the sun. That hat can’t hide it, Cam, you’re clearly completely chonged. Allegedly. Jeez, on this evidence, while cannabis might have a variety of medicinal benefits, adding to the attractiveness of babelicious Hollywood actresses isn’t one of them. OK, it’s not that she looks bad – the bikini ensures that, and it’s Cameron for chrissakes! Just maybe not quite as good as in the glossy photo shoots we’re used too.

It was 2007 when Cameron was snapped here in Hawaii, celebrating the birthday of long-time gal pal and former enfant terrible Drew Barrymore (who wasn’t without her more serious childhood drug problems). And what better way for the two hotties to party it up than by sparking up a joint and getting blazed together. Of course, the girls didn’t know they were being photographed, or the paparazzi might have got blazed too. Blazed or badly beaten. Clearly actresses smoking pot out in the open in broad daylight is becoming something of a craze, and sweet Lucy if we’re not jumping on the bandwagon.

4. Lindsay Lohan

It was inevitable that Lindsay Lohan would make an appearance somewhere on this list. For all her failings (and there are quite a few), she’s damn hot and, yes, she smokes pot. Or did. Back in 2005, she confessed, “I’m not going to deny the fact that I’ve tried pot. I hated it.” And everyone appreciated her honesty. Only thing is, in 2007 she was spotted raving it up at a New York nightclub, and a great, smoky mystery took form surrounding what exactly she was holding in this picture. Call us naive, but we’re not sure that’s a regular cigarette Li-Lo’s pinching. Still, the self-confessed drug and alcohol addict no doubt has more to worry about than a bit of reefer madness. Everyone knows Herbie isn’t the only one to have gone bananas – and surely no one’s blaming that little blunt.

3. Kirsten Dunst

Kirsten Dunst appears to have been at the herb in this next shot, although we’ll admit the evidence is a little, well, slim, so the jury’s kind of still out. That said, the sweet and demure-seeming actress has professed: “I do like weed… If everyone smoked weed, the world would be a better place.” It would certainly be a different place, Kirsten, we’ll give you that. And if your idea of a utopia is a nation of zombies, grazing wantonly on food in supermarket aisles, eyes forever glazed and mouths forever dry, then yes, it would be a better place too. She also claimed: “My best friend Sasha’s dad was Carl Sagan, the astronomer. He was the biggest pot smoker in the world and he was a genius.” Ah, the old Carl Sagan chestnut. The fact that Kirsten played Mary Jane in the Spider-Man trilogy is starting to look like less of a coincidence.

Getting maximum points for style and economy, it’s Charlize Theron smoking something pungent through a piece of fruit. Original sin. You’ve got to hand it to the South African star of Monster, The Devil’s Advocate and other well cool movies: being caught sucking on an apple bong, then erupting into a giggle-fit after exhaling, is proof that drop dead gorgeous actresses who rock the pot can be Academy Award winners too. The pics, which made it into the National Enqirer, were taken in 2002, and show Charlize apparently getting high the organic way during a pool party in her LA home. Instead of defending her client’s right to suck smoke from her fruit of choice, Theron’s publicist declined to comment. Perhaps he had apple stuck in his mouth.

The one. The only. Marilyn Monroe. Shown here in a still from a video that emerged in 2009, 50 years after the nefarious fact. The home movie allegedly shows the quintessential blond bombshell, clearly very chilled, smoking a joint that’s been passed to her, before laughing and blowing kisses at the camera. Shot at a house in New Jersey, this silent film suggests that while Some Like It Hot, Marilyn seems to have liked pot (not to mention various other more dangerous substances, including the barbiturates that eventually killed her). In the footage, she definitely takes a good old toke on the jazz cigarette in question – and unlike the president who would have surely tried to bed her if he’d been old enough, she does inhale. Still, she appears happy enough, doesn’t she?
